I cant write anything without being that person.
But obviously its of intense interest to women and to mothers and grandmothers, because Im that as well.
Because what Im writing is what Im trying to make into a really authentic historical novel.
I brought to the historical novel radicalism, a sense of the importance of working people.
It was a novel about class struggle.
It was a very sexy novel at a time when historical fiction was traditionally much more demure.
Ive never thought that.
Ive always thought that they were important and interesting to write about because they have extraordinary lives.
The women who are usually obscured by the kings.
The setting inTidelandsis unique.
So, it was a very evocative landscape for me.
Tidelandshas its fair share of forbidden love.
Theres no dramatic tension.
In a sense, the route toward it is the most interesting.
And in this case, they are forbidden at multiple levels.
If I feel that way about it thats usually a sign that its going to be quite a page-turner.
At the moment, Im just going with the flow.
