Where did the idea come from to introduce this deaf musician, Paul?

CHAMBLISS:So much of this episode was about Alicia finding her own voice.

This was all about her realizing she had to listen to her own voice.

And so that’s why we wanted her to be kind of isolated with this character.

Why “Ode to Joy” and why bagpipes?

“Ode to Joy,” Beethoven’s ninth, was written years after Beethoven went fully deaf.

And so that became the idea that was just sitting out there.

And we found the right story to kind of meld that into.

You don’t meet people every day who can talk about being a fan of bagpipes.
